The inventory is mainly based on literature data.0The data set represents the specific situation for the global average by focusing on the main technologies and the legislative conditions of the region.Key parameters for calculating the energy requirement of an irrigation pump:
- share of groundwater used
- share of power supply by diesel
- operating pressure (dependent on irrigation technology)
- pump lift (ground water table)
- efficiencies of the irrigation method, the pump and the power unit
The following default data is used (all based on Daccache 2014):
- pumping efficiency: 80%
- power conversion efficiency for diesel power supply: 40%
- power conversion efficiency for electricity supply: 90%
- nominal operating pressure: 3 bar (Daccache 2014: 3 bar for medium sized sprinklers, 1bar for drip irrigation )
- irrigation efficiency: 100% - assuming that the total water demand is known. If only the theoretical water demand of a plant is known (e.g. values from CROPWAT) the irrigation efficiency has to be adapted.
Lift and pressure of zero will result in no energy use, e.g. if surface water is assumed to be conveyed to the farm by gravity and not pressurized (as in Daccache 2014).The share of ground water and surface water used for irrigation can be assessed on country level based on IGRAC 2015. Pumping lift (m)can be taken into consideration based on the global water table depth data set (Fan et al. 2013) and weighted depending on the mix of abstraction sources in each country. The emissions for combustion of diesel are derived from the GaBi database for a diesel generator.Provision of a standard technical process according to the applied technology.Irrigation Pump calculation
Energy requirement pump (in Watt) [http://www.raeng.org.uk/publications/other/17-pumping-water]:
(1) P =(Q*H*g*p)/p_eff
Where
P = energy requirement pump in W
Q = flow rate in m³/s
H = total head in m
g = gravity (m/s²)
p = density of water (kg/m³)
p_eff = pumping efficiency
p is constant (1000kg/m³) for water, so is gravity (9.81 m/s²). To transfer W kW the equation is devided by 1000.
(2) P = (Q*H*9,81)/p_eff
To calculate the total sum of energy in kWh consumed by a pump to pump a given volume of water, the energy requirement needs to be multiplied time required to pump this volume of water.
(3) Ptot = P*h
Where
Ptot = energy consumption in kWh and
h = time in hours
To calculate the time required to pump a given volume of water, the volume needs to be divided by the flow rate (devision by 3600 to transfer from s to h).
(4) h = V/(Q*3600)
where
h = time in hours
Q = flow rate in m³/s
V = total volume of irrigation water applied
(3) and (4) combined lead to
(5) Ptot = P*V/(Q*3600)
(5) and (2) combined lead to:
(6) Ptot = ((Q*H*9,81)/p_eff)*V/(Q*3600)
Q cancels out!
(7) Ptot = H*9,81*V/p_eff*3600 = H*V/367*p_eff

Carbon storage and delayed emissions: credits associated with temporary (carbon) storage or delayed emissions are not considered in the calculation of the Global Warming Potential impacts for the default impact categories.
Emissions off-setting: not included
Fossil and biogenic carbon emissions and removals: removals and emissions are modelled as follows: All GHG emissions from fossil fuels (including peat and limestone) are modelled consistently with the ILCD list of elementary flows. In the case that the emissions refer to the molecules CO2 and CH4, they are modelled as ‘carbon dioxide (fossil)’ and ‘methane (fossil)’. Biogenic uptake and emissions are modelled separately. For land use change, all carbon emissions and uptakes are inventoried separately for each of the elementary flows. Soil carbon accumulation (uptake) via improved agricultural management is excluded from the model.NoneGaBi Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Water Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Agriculture Model DocumentationCut-off rules for unit process: Coverage of at least 95 % of mass and energy of the input and output flows, and 98 % of their environmental relevance (according to expert judgement).

Combination with individual unit processes using this commodity enables the generation of user-specific (product) LCAs. The data set does not necessarily fit for any possible specific supply situation - especially if significantly different technology routes exist - but is representative for a common supply chain situation.Sphera Solutions GmbHIABP-GaBi2022-03-01T00:00:00.000ILCD format 1.1Sphera Solutions GmbHNo official approval by producer or operator2022-03-01T00:00:00.00000.00.001Data set finalised; entirely publishedGaBi databasesSphera Solutions GmbHtrueOtherGaBi (source code, database including extension modules and single data sets, documentation) remains property of Sphera Solutions GmbH.
